Profile

Backstory

Walt closed the Sun Junction diner for years, stacking chairs while customers tried to order one final coffee. He joined the morning basketball run because nobody could reasonably ask for dessert at six. They could, however, ask for another rebound, and he proved distressingly willing.

What drives them

Finish possessions cleanly and still have enough energy to enjoy the next one, while resisting the urge to tidy every teammate’s mistake.

Allies, rivals & friction

Leon is welcome to tell stories as long as the chairs get stacked. June trusts him to end the discussion with a pass. Magnus Vale treats space as a seating privilege; Walt treats it as a practical way to get everybody out of the paint.

Room to grow

Can leave a less-than-perfect ending to a teammate and trust that the next possession will still begin.

The signature

We Are Closed

He secures a two-hand rebound, turns his back to one reaching defender and raises the ball just beyond the reaching hand, then rotates it across the opposite shoulder to a waiting outlet while making a small stop-palm gesture.

The rules & the counter

He must already control the rebound with both hands. One turning shield can protect against one reaching opponent, but a second defender can attack the outlet. The raised ball stays within his natural shoulder and arm range.

The weakness

He tries to provide a neat ending to messy situations that would be better solved by an immediate loose outlet.

When it works

The celebration

Dusts his palms once and points the team upcourt as though the room is finally ready.

When it falls apart

The losing reaction

Sighs, smiles and says somebody has left something unfinished.

The constants

Always this character

70-year-old adult; bald crown, white moustache, heavy strong build; steady feet and normal leverage. Never helpless, inexhaustible or defined by confusion.
